This pattern is suitable for beginners or those with some crochet experience.

Materials

To create the Andy Button Scarf, you will need:

  • Size J crochet hook 6.00 mm (or whatever hook is needed for gauge)
  • Yarn needle
  • Less than 340 yards of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn in Linen (or any worsted weight (4) yarn)
  • Two 1″ buttons (Coconut Shell Buttons recommended)

Abbreviations

  • hdc = half double crochet
  • ch = chain
  • bl = back loop
  • st = stitch
  • sk = skip

Gauge for Ribbing

Each row should be approximately 3″ wide x 0.70" high. Aim for 8 hdc’s for every 3" inches.

Gauge for Main Pattern

A gauge of 12 hdc’s for every 4" is recommended for the main pattern of the scarf.

Sizing

The finished scarf should be approximately 64″ in circumference and 6″ in width. Refer to our scarf size chart for adjustments.

Notes

  • If you wish to alter the length of the scarf, continue crocheting the ribbing to your desired length before following the pattern.
  • Following gauge recommendations is crucial for a properly sized scarf.
  • The pattern is written in standard US terms.

Pattern Steps

This scarf pattern consists of several components that culminate in the Andy Scarf:

Foundation Row:

Chain 9, half double crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc in remaining chains across, turn (8 sts).

Row 1-95:

Continue working in the back loop half double crochet in each stitch across. Repeat this pattern for all rows.

Do not fasten off yarn at row 95, chain 1 to proceed to scarf pattern.

Scarf:

Work along the long side of ribbing, crocheting evenly across the edge as follows:

Row 1:

Work 145 half double crochets evenly across the long side of the ribbing, turn (145 sts).

Row 2-7:

Continue with half double crochets in the back loop of each stitch across for 7 rows (145 sts).

Finishing:

If no buttons are desired, fasten off and weave in loose ends with a yarn needle. If buttons are preferred, follow the buttonhole instructions below.

Button Holes (optional):

Create buttonholes for your scarf as follows:

Row 1:

Half double crochet, half double crochet, skip 1 stitch, chain 1, half double crochet in the next 10 hdc, skip 1 st, chain 1, half double crochet, half double crochet (16 sts).

Row 2:

Chain 1, half double crochet in each stitch across (16 sts).

Finishing:

Attach buttons evenly on the opposite end of the scarf without buttonholes. Weave in loose ends throughout the scarf using a yarn needle for a neat finish.
