How do I calculate how much Aida fabric I need?
Divide your pattern's stitch count by the fabric count to get the finished size in inches. For example, a 140-stitch-wide pattern on 14-count Aida will be 10 inches wide. Then add 6 inches total (3 inches on each side) for framing margins. So you would need a 16-inch-wide piece of fabric.
How many skeins of embroidery floss do I need for cross stitch?
A standard DMC skein contains 8.7 yards (313.2 inches) of floss. Each full cross stitch on 14-count Aida uses roughly 1.5 inches of 2-strand floss. Multiply your total stitch count by the thread per stitch, then divide by 313.2 and distribute across the number of colours in your pattern. This calculator does that math for you instantly.
How long does a cross stitch project take to finish?
It depends on the total stitch count and your stitching speed. Beginners typically stitch around 15 stitches per minute, intermediates around 25, and experienced stitchers around 35. A 12,000-stitch project at intermediate speed takes about 8 hours of stitching. At 1 hour per day, that is roughly 8 days.
What size embroidery hoop should I use for cross stitch?
Choose a hoop that is at least as large as your finished design. Common sizes are 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch. For very large projects, a scroll frame or Q-snap frame may be a better choice. This calculator recommends the best hoop diameter based on your pattern dimensions.
