Introduction:

Crocheting an afghan blanket is a wonderful way to showcase your creative skills and produce a cozy piece of decor or a thoughtful gift. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of crocheting an afghan pattern using a free crochet pattern. The skill level required for this project is easy, making it suitable for beginners or experienced crocheters looking for a fun and relaxing project.

Materials:

  • Lion Brand Wool-Ease or any four-weight yarn (see yardage chart below)
  • Yarn color: Wheat
  • 5mm (H-8) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker

Finished Size:

The blanket size shown in this pattern is for a stroller. However, you can refer to the size chart below to create afghan blankets of various sizes, including lovey, baby, receiving, throw, twin, full, queen, and king sizes.

Gauge:

For this project, the gauge is 8 rows x 12 stitches = 3.5″ x 3.5″. You can create the gauge pattern by chaining 12 and following the written pattern provided below.

Notes:

  • The pattern is in standard US terms
  • Change blanket size by working in any multiple of 3
  • Stitches count at the end of the row = the starting chain
  • Use stitch markers to mark every 20 to 30 foundation chains to make it easier to keep track of stitches

Yardage Chart:

Border:

This part of the afghan is optional. You can add a simple single crochet border by crocheting single crochets along the sides as evenly as possible. At the corners, single crochet, chain 1, then single crochet in the same stitch. Repeat this technique for all four corners. To give a polished look, crochet along the outside of the blanket once.
