Materials:

  • Less than 1 skein of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn in Magenta or 121 yards of worsted weight (4) yarn
  • Size I crochet hook 5.5 mm or whatever hook size is needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • Seven 1/2″ Coconut Shell Buttons
  • Thread

Abbreviations:

  • HDC = half double crochet
  • CH = chain
  • ST = stitch
  • BL = back loop
  • SC = single crochet
  • SK = skip

Notes:

Finished size is approx a 24″ circumference & 7″ height

Gauge is 5 STS for every 2″

Crochet Button Cowl Pattern Steps

Foundation Row: Ch 70 + 2

Row 1: HDC in 2nd ch from hook, HDC in every ch across, turn. (70)

Row 2: CH 2, starting in last HDC from row before HDC in the BL, HDC in the BL of every ST across, turn. (70)

Finishing

Option 1:

CH 1, hold together the two short ends of the cowl with the wrong side facing out and join them together with 11 SC’s. Fasten off yarn, then weave in loose ends with a yarn needle.

Option 2:

(with functioning buttons) at the end of row 11, turn your work to the long side of the cowl.

Attaching Buttons

Option 1:

After weaving in ends attach the 7 buttons with yarn needle & thread evenly along the seam that you just joined with the right side facing out.

Option 2:

Lay buttons on right side of cowl along short side without the button holes. Line up the buttons evenly with the holes and attach with thread and the yarn needle.
