Why Before & After Cross Stitch?

Life is full of beautiful transformations - a puppy becoming a loyal companion, a couple's journey from first date to wedding day, or a house turning into a home. Before & after cross stitch captures these two defining moments side by side in a single, powerful piece of art.

What Makes Two-Panel Designs Special

  • Tells a story - Two images side by side create a narrative that a single photo cannot
  • Emotional impact - Seeing the transformation in stitched form amplifies the emotional connection
  • Unique keepsake - No one else will have a piece that tells your exact story
  • Twice the memories - Two cherished moments preserved in one display-worthy piece
  • Perfect gift - Ideal for pet owners, couples, parents, and homeowners
  • Conversation piece - Visitors always want to hear the story behind the images

How It Works

Simply upload two photos - your "before" and "after" - and we'll design a beautiful two-panel cross stitch pattern. Both images are carefully balanced for colour, size, and composition so they sit perfectly together as a cohesive piece.

Photo Tips for Two-Panel Designs

The key to a beautiful before & after piece is consistency between both photos. Here's how to get the best results:

For the Best Results

  • Match the angle: Try to use a similar camera angle and distance for both shots
  • Similar framing: Both subjects should be roughly the same size in their respective photos
  • Good lighting: Clear, well-lit photos with the subject clearly visible in both
  • Same orientation: Both photos should be the same orientation (both portrait or both landscape)
  • Clear faces/features: Ensure the subject's key features are visible in both images

Things to Avoid

  • Mismatched sizes: One close-up and one distant shot will look unbalanced
  • Different orientations: Mixing portrait and landscape photos creates layout issues
  • Cluttered backgrounds: Busy backgrounds compete with the subject in both panels
  • Low resolution: Both photos need to be clear enough for pattern conversion
  • Very different lighting: One bright and one dark photo will look disconnected

Don't Worry If Photos Aren't Perfect

We understand that the "before" photo is often from years ago and may not be professional quality. We'll do our best to balance both images during the pattern creation process. Just send us the best versions you have and we'll make it work beautifully.

Size Guide for Before & After Pieces

Two-panel designs work best in wider formats that give each image enough space to shine. Here are our recommendations:

30 x 20 cm

Compact Landscape

A neat side-by-side layout that works well for simple subjects like pet portraits or home exteriors.

  • Each panel: approx. 14 x 20 cm
  • Best for: Pet portraits, simple subjects
  • Stitching time: 50-80 hours
50 x 30 cm

Wide Panoramic

Maximum impact with generous space for each panel. Ideal for detailed subjects or when you want a statement piece for the wall.

  • Each panel: approx. 24 x 30 cm
  • Best for: Detailed portraits, renovation photos
  • Stitching time: 150-220 hours

Display Ideas for Before & After Pieces

How you frame and display your two-panel piece can really enhance its impact.

Single Frame, Dual Mount

One frame with a mount board cut for two openings. Creates a clean, cohesive look with a small gap between both panels. The most popular framing choice.

Diptych Frames

Two matching frames hung side by side with a small gap between them. Gives each image its own space whilst clearly showing they belong together.

Single Continuous Frame

One large frame with both images stitched on a single piece of fabric with a decorative divider between them. A seamless, unified presentation.

Embroidery Hoops

Two matching embroidery hoops displayed side by side. A more casual, craft-forward presentation that works beautifully in modern interiors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do both photos need to be the same quality?

Ideally yes, but we understand that "before" photos are often older and lower quality. We'll balance both images during pattern creation so they look cohesive. The "before" photo just needs to be clear enough to identify the subject - it doesn't need to be professional quality.

Is it one pattern or two separate patterns?

It's designed as a single unified pattern on one piece of fabric with both images side by side and a small decorative gap between them. This ensures perfect alignment and a cohesive finished piece. You stitch it as one continuous project.

Can I have more than two panels?

Yes! Some customers request three or four panels to show a progression over time - such as a pet's growth from puppy to senior, or a child at different ages. Contact us to discuss multi-panel options and we'll create a custom layout.

What if my "before" photo is very old or low resolution?

We can work with most photos as long as the subject is recognisable. Older photos, scanned prints, and even screenshots can work. The cross stitch medium is quite forgiving - the grid of stitches naturally smooths out minor quality issues. Send us what you have and we'll let you know.

How long does a before & after piece take to stitch?

As it's essentially two images, expect roughly 1.5 to 2 times the stitching time of a single portrait at the same overall size. Our standard 40x30cm size typically takes 100-150 hours. At an hour or two per evening, most stitchers complete it in 3-5 months.

Can I add text between or below the panels?

Absolutely! Many customers add dates, names, or a short caption. For example, "2018 - 2026" below a pet's growth portrait, or the couple's names and dates below engagement-to-wedding panels. Just include your text preferences when ordering.

Is this suitable for a beginner?

Yes! The technique is the same as any cross stitch project - standard full cross stitches following a chart. The pattern is simply wider than a single-image piece. Our kits include everything you need plus clear instructions to guide you through.

Can I use photos of different subjects (not the same person/pet)?

Of course! While most before & after pieces show the same subject over time, some customers create beautiful pieces comparing two related subjects - such as a parent and child at the same age, or two generations of a family home. The two-panel format works for any meaningful pairing.
